LOL… I love it Rotten. I might try something similar. And thank you MooseHunter for the tip as well. I know I need to rely on my own ‘check’ before giving the all clear to the kids and will definitely do what’s necessary but by the sounds of that last post, I was beginning to wonder if there was even a point in bringing up the auger. Is it safe to say I will find it safe after checking for myself?

I have a technique I have developed over the last few years to test ice thickness with easy to find household items! First I throw the ball out and see if the dog comes back, if dog comes back 3-5 inches. Next I whip my sons x-box out there and see if son comes back, if son comes back 5-8 inches. Final test I toss my wife's Gucci bag way out there, if I make it back 7-10 inches.

Always check the ice for yourself. Just take a cordless drill with a long bit and put a piece of tape on it 7 inches up. Then drill the ice till it breaks through if its at the tape you are okay. Test a large area then build your rink. Mush on top does not mean bad ice it could still have good ice below .

I know it's my responsibility and I should ultimately check for myself, but I was under the impression the ice thickness was safe. We are coming up over New Years and wanted to build a little bit of an ice rink for the kids but should I be letting them know now it's not going to happen so they aren't dissapointed? Sure it wasn't just some slush on top of the ice? Just checking and collecting any information before we come up. Thanks.

Just got back from the Lake. Can't believe the sleds zipping across the ice with such mild weather. We watched a guy on an atv just about go under in our bay. He just made it back to land. My question is..... who is going to rescue these guys when it does happen?

Well powderski if you live on the southside, just step outside and check it. Otherwise read Kiwi's daily weather reports. Cheers!
