Once the wind can get at the open water that has been created with shore melt it does not take that long for the wind action to clear the entire lake of Ice. Most years the Ice is cleared starting at the East end with a stiff East wind creating the waves that break up the Ice down to the West end. Which is why most years Ice is driven up on shore large distances on the NW side of the lake. The odd year the Ice will go out with a West wind which demolishes many wharves on the south side. Does not matter how sturdy they are built the Ice has the power of many D8's

For the interest of the Fishermen and others. With the very strong SE winds we are experiencing we are starting to see the Ice clear out on the East end of the Lake and have open water here.
If the winds continue it is possible the entire Lake may open up very quickly.

We arrived the Friday of May Long Weekend last year at noon, temp in the truck read 27 degrees, yet there was still some ice in the southwest corner of the bay on Nath road. Quite a surreal scene to say the least. The ice had come off the day before we were told. Latest I can remember (been on Nath road for 36 years)...
