Now that the ice is (virtually) gone, how long is it likely to be till lake is turned over? Hoping to get a few buddies together and come up on the first weekend in May. Will that be enough time?24

I wouldn't let the lack of fish ever stop me from going on a fishing trip! I'd never get to go if that were the case! But that's just me... smile I'll be up next week, and usually soon after ice-off, I see the 'hogs' cruising the shallows from my dock. I'll let you know.

An update from our fishing trip last weekend-we caught 4 between 3, culminating in a 27" 8 lb. 11 oz. beauty on Sunday morning. It was time well spent!

Amazing how fast the Ice is coming of Sheridan lake, yet 5 miles away and a mere 100' higher, there seems to be no open water yet on Bridge, looking through the eye of the Friends of Bridge lake cam

Well, I've got to give it to rockinshelby... April 3rd! I expect to see SteveM in a float tube floating by soon.

Wow. are we calling April 3 'official ice-off'? What about Watch Lake? Has anyone heard the status of ice-off there? I try to keep notes on several of the lakes also.

Typically 'ice-off' is called when all the ice is gone. We aren't there yet!

With the fresh snow, it looks like open water over by big island/Thomas Point on the Kiwi cam?

We've been walking along the shore without fear the past few days; about 30-50m out. There is some open water where trees overhang the ice. Still around 12 inches on the south side. However, there are dark spots and cracks further out. I wouldn't venture care free on the lake at this point. Warm rain today. Warmer tomorrow. You must do your own testing and make your own decisions.

Thanks. We took a look when we came up yesterday and it was pretty obvious you would be taking your life in your hands venturing out. Stayed at the cabin and did some outside work. Hopefully by the next time, lake will be open and turned over. Thanks everyone for the info.

So , is the ice still safe for ice-fishing this weekend?

Ron Wednesday, 25 March 2015 05:17 PM
No , lots and LOTS of Water on top !

Lorin Wednesday, 25 March 2015 06:31 PM
Is it a footing issue or thin ice issue?

Ron Friday, 27 March 2015 07:22 PM
Put it this way ,, Horse Lake went out or under if You like , Today....5 weeks early ! Sheridan is NOT safe ,, the ice doesn't "Go Out " so to speak ,.....it Sinks! and if this happens when Your on it ?.... it's not worth Your Life ! I have seen people before sliding a tin boat with them and then sit in it and ice fish ,, but even then Ya might still need a rescue ! good Luck and have Fun ! stay safe ..Ron

Hey Rob, do you have records of the water temp when the ice goes out? At 40 degrees, I'm sure it's eating away at it from the underside.

Rob Send E-mail Sunday, 22 March 2015 10:49 AM
Good question Steve, the average lake temp when the ice went out for the last 7 yrs is 43...

Well, I just went out (in a t-shirt) and augured just over a foot of good ice, 1/2 tween clear and that hollow crumbly stuff. I'm seeing quads still going out fishing... so maybe it'll still be around? Course that would make my prediction wrong! frown
I will add though that the cracks are real. The one you see in the camera running 8 to 3 o-clock is actually 3" wide and I could stick the auger handle down through clear water.

Lorin Wednesday, 18 March 2015 06:12 PM
Thanks for the info. Hopefully it holds till then at least.

(2263) Looks like a real whooper of a windstorm hit the Interlakes! The Bridge Lake weather station shows a gust of 60kmh at 1:30ish. Hoping all our roofs are intact! smile Hydro has a lot of wires to rehang!
